General Clark, My name is Elisabeth,I'm 18, and I am a student at Dartmouth College. I've followed politics with a passion for the past 6 years (a significant chunk of my life!) and I, like many other young Americans, am deeply concerned about the state of our nation's leadership. I recently traveled overseas, and often found myself heistent to open my mouth to avoid rampant anti-American sentiment. No one should be ashamed to be American, but at times, I am. It pains me that a country that I once loved so much now has many policies that I find despicable and foolish. I loathe domestic policy that neglects Americans in need, I shutter at the lack of environmental policy, I abhor the administration's assault on civil rights (there is making Americans safer, and then there is making Americans afraid and panicked--guess which one is the status quo), and I fear that our nation's security is slipping through the cracks. President Bush and his administration have become purely reactionary: constantly failing to grasp issues at their roots; instead forming asinine and lame organizations that will most certainly not prevent another catastrophe. We cannot defend ourselves from another terrorist attack by telling the nation to buy duct tape to seal their windows. It's absurd. Why do these terrorists seek our destruction? It is not, as Mr. Bush says, because they "hate freedom". Such banal and simplistic platitudes just wash over the problem. Some Americans may accept this trash, perhaps because they wish to mollify their fears and rationalize our actions. Everyone wants to believe they are the proverbial "good guys". You and I (and many others out there...I hope) know that the world is not that simple. President Bush's rhetoric attempts to polarize foreign affairs as such. This is DANGEROUS and an attempt to deceive the American people. I do not know what your position on the Iraqi war is, but I do know that President George W. Bush is not a man that should have that kind of power. I could honestly go on for hours, but it is nearing 2AM and I have to work tommorrow. If you do decide to serve our nation by running for president, you will have an amazing volunteer network, dedicated to your campaign. I imagine you have already ascertained that by the volume of mail you must be receiving. Lastly, I must IMPLORE you, please, please run for president. The democratic candidates out there have some potential, but if there's one thing I've learned from my studies of political science, it's that a sucessful presidential candidate must be moderate. You are the most well-rounded, the most knowledgable, the most innately intellegent and competant person for the job that we have. I truly believe that without you, George Bush will most certainly win in 2004. Please, don't let this happen. He will assail our rights(women's right to choose for example), mislead our people, and fail to protect our country. You are the ideal candidate to challange him. I am afraid that his actions since being in office will have long term, negative repercussions on our nation, and the world, and I am concerned that there is a possibility he could be re-elected. While watching your clear, concise analysis of Operation Iraqi Freedom, I knew if you could be convinced to run for President, you will be elected. We need a viable candidate for 2004. Although the current contenders are good candidates, they do not have the requisite "fire in the belly" to let the American people know that we are in trouble. General Clark - we are on the wrong track in this country and too many Americans are eating up the current administrations media sound bytes about how & why things are fine. Our Iraq policy is flawed. Our Homeland Security policy is irresponsible and lacks funding (being used to rebuild Iraq). The environment is being completely devestaed and ignored. Deficits are out of control. Kids aren't learning. Only the rich are seeing significant tax cuts. Seniors are being ripped off by the current Prescripion Medication legislation. It's appalling. Worst of all, this administration has used September 11th to justify every foreign and domestic action including keeping those that disagree with any of their policies at bay by calling them unpatriotic or obstructionist. General Clark, I served in the Army from 1968-1971. I entered as a 2nd Lieutenant after being commissioned through ROTC. I served as a platoon leader and company commander in Viet Nam during a 13-month tour. I left active duty as a Captain. I was also jump qualified. I also had the privilege of knowing and serving under Lt. General Hal Moore at Fort Ord. I am not a pacifist but I also love history. I feel imposed upon because I understand that our fight in Viet Nam was based on a lie. I didn’t know it until years later. I am a patriot, not a jingoist. I believe that the American Constitution is one of the most incredible documents ever written. That is why I am an active member of the ACLU. I believe in the environment, I believe in the rule of law, I believe in the planet, and I believe all of these things need someone to defend them. I believe that someone is you. It’s not only because I desperately want to beat George W. Bush for the welfare of this country and I believe you can do that. But I think it is time once again that we put our brightest people with real vision in charge of this country. I am 58 years old. If George W. I'm fairly happy with our current president in many areas and of course feel he is human and imperfect in some ways as well. I vote for the candidate that I want no matter what the party. I like viable choices and think it is healthy for this country and I feel you would be the most viable choice to actually pose a decent challenge to Bush. If you don't run, my vote goes to Bush. If you do run, it becomes 50\50 at that point and I'll research and see what kind of ideas you have and consider voting for you. Being a former infantry Marine myself, I have a default trust in military officers that would work in your favor. I hope you will run for the office of President of the United States of America in 2004 and bring balance to the election. The current crop of "wannabees" is just miserable and they will simply get trounced. I won't vote for any of them. Dear Mr. Clark, Everywhere I look I see insanity. I see it on the faces of my neighbors, and I hear it in their voices. (example: one of my neighbors justified the War in Iraq by saying "its payback for September 11". When I pointed out that none of the hijackers were from Iraq, he replied "they're all the same".) I have to listen to this insanity every night on the news and talk shows. Our oldest and one of our closest allies, the French, have been demonized for not going along with us. At home, Americans are routinely "Dixie-Chicked" for exercising their 1st Amendment rights. These are scary times. Recently the press has finally started to report what many Americans have known all along, that this war was justified using intellegence which was dubious at best and fabricated at worst. I have a cousin who's in Iraq. He doesn't want to be there. He should never have been sent there in the first place. As a General, I'm sure that you'll agree that war should always be the very last resort. I don't feel that the Iraqi "crisis" lived up to that standard. The most serious consequence of this illegal war is the fact that there's a real possibility that we may find ourselves in another war in the Korean peninsula very soon. With half our forces in the Persian Gulf region, as a nation, we are ill prepared for it. We may have to reinstate the draft. Is this what we want? A state of perpetual war? Something has to be done to turn the tide around before its too late. America desperately needs a strong leader who can mend our alliances and bring sanity back to our foreign policy. We need a leader who is charismatic enough so that the American people will listen to him. We need someone who will be able stand up when the partisan attack dogs are unleashed on him (prepare yourself. If you do decide to run, they will come after you). Most of all, we need someone to address the American people and tell them need to get over the shock of 911 and deal with our nation's problems in a rational and pragmatic fashion. I fear that most of the current candidates fall short of these standards. But I feel that you are indeed the man for the job. Some of us out there still believe that our Commander in Chief should be the embodiment of the best and the brightest. Please give serious consideration to running for the office of President of the United States. We stand at the crossroads of history. Your country needs you. General Clark, I am amazed that your reluctance to run for President comes not from worries about electoral or fundraising success, but from an acknowledgment that it is an immense responsibility to be POTUS. This shows me that you have tremendous respect for this country and what it stands for. Has there ever been a more mismanaged and turbulent adminstration than the current and hopefully not future one? Start with major tax cuts at a time when we are spending 3.9 billion a day in Iraq, billions more in Afghanistan and homeland security and this is all you need to examine to realize that this president is completely in over his head which were the doubts which were cast about him before he was ever "elected." Add to that the growing quagmire in Iraq which there seems to be no way out of without the major sacrifice of the lives of US soldiers and just on the totally inept handling by the current administration on these two important topics you can see just how much we need you as our president to straighten out this mountainous mess. This is a time of somewhat unpreceedented crisis in this country and four more years of the current adminstration might set this country back 50-100 years and only you can change this direction. There is no one on the Democratic side who has declared who is electable and you are our only real hope for a positive change in this country which we need like a flower needs the rain. Dear General Wesley Clark, There has been a lot of talk in my circles about the current presidential nominees. There has been a lot of discussion about John Kerry, about John Edwards, about Howard Dean, about Dick Gephardt. Those in my circle are disenchanted with the current nominees. We are disenchanted with their politics and their willingness to change their views whenever the political wind changes direction. That is politics, however, and cannot always be avoided. What we are most disenchanted with, however, is their ability to win back the presidency from George W. Bush in 2004. In the midst of the War on Terror, in the midst of the Iraqi occupation, in the midst of economic crisis, the current President of the United States enjoys tremendous support. The current president enjoys support for making war on the American people—for stripping us of our civil liberties and proving that the terrorists won. The current President enjoys support for making war against the people of Iraq and provoking war against our soldiers who are still over their in the false name of Iraqi Freedom. The current President enjoys support for making war against the poor and disenfranchised of this nation by giving more money to his wealthy friends through tax cuts. The current President enjoys support for making war against the values that we as Americans should hold dear—that all Americans have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness—that all Americans have the right to a decent job at a decent wage—that all Americans have the right to have food on their table, and a home to put the table in—that all Americans enjoy the same rights regardless of their sex or the color of their skin or the way they worship or what they believe. General Clark, at stake are the values that have been hard won over the eleven score and seven years of our nation’s history. If the United States is to remain the best hope for all mankind then we must have a president that does not embrace war, but embraces the values and principles on which America was founded. In my circle of friends we have been discussing the candidates that have announced their intentions to run in 2004. None of us doubts their belief in what I have spoken of, but we do not believe that any of them have the ability to unseat the current President. General Clark, we believe that you can unseat the current President, and we hope that you will take on the challenge. America needs you, sir, probably more than it has ever needed you before.

I can understand not wanting to enter the fray of politics in Washington; the lies, misrepresentations and constant stream of attacks by so-called "political enemies". Dear General Clark: This is my second letter to you regarding the possibility that you would enter the presidential race. A lot of time has past since my last letter and a lot of things have changed. Of our top tier candidates I fear that Dean may emerge as the candidate. Because of Iraq Resolution votes of Kerry, Lieberman, Edwards and Gephardt, they have likely rendered themselves unelectable. Watch them backpeddle now about their Iraq Resolution votes. The more revelations that come out about the so-called Iraqi intelligence that led us to the "invasion" the more foolish they look. I do not see any leadership qualities in these men and doubt that America at large will see any leadership qualities. I believe that in order for Howard Dean to win, things would have to get twice as bad in this country than they are now. While Dean may be inspirational to the liberal base, I don't think he would have enough appeal to win the general election. Plus, we know based upon the 2000 election that the Republicans will seek to subvert the will of the people. We need a candidate who is election-theft proof. That candidate is you. If I may suggest Bob Graham as a running mate, I think we have found the silver bullet that will render bush/cheney unemployed. Both you and Senator Graham were against the Iraq Invasion and are both experts in your respective disciplines. Please run General Clark. The future of America is at stake. While not a huge deal, the fact that Kerry, Edwards, Lieberman, and another candidate had a "secret" agreement about appearing in concert with one another. Dear General W. Clark (Army, ret.), Rather than send the same old form-letter (you probably have a few hundred of them), I wanted to take a few moments to let you know my own personal reasons for asking you to run in the 2004 Presidential campaign. A few years ago, I neglected to vote in the Primaries, because I was a registered Democrat, and did not believe that any of the Democratic candidates could effectively lead this Nation properly. If I had been permitted to vote for a Republican candidate in the Primaries, I would have voted against Mr. Bush, just to make his chances that much slimmer. In November of 2000, I held a ballot and prepared to vote for the people who I thought could be the best leaders for this Nation, and for the State of California (I was a resident of Los Angeles). My choices for local and State Officers was rather simple. The Candidates were each good choices, with their own views of how to lead the City and State. Unfortunately, when looking at the offerings at the top of the ballot, my decision was much more difficult. I thought that each of the Independant candidates were much too wishy-washy, Mr. Gore certainly was not self-confident enough to be an effective leader of the greatest Nation in the world, and I certainly knew that Mr. G.W. Bush would do great harm to the core ideals embodied in my beloved flag and Constitution. I considered writing in President Clinton, but knew that would be not only futile, but downright wishful thinking. So, I took a pencil and hand-wrote onto my ballot, "None of the Above." Many say that my vote was wasted. To them all, I say, "No, I voted my conscience. A vote is not wasted unless you choose simply not to vote at all." Though that vote for None of the Above may have been futile, it was the voice of my conscience and opinion. Mr. Gore won the popular votes. Mr. Bush bought some electoral votes, and used his family to strong-arm the Florida electoral votes to his favor. On January 20, 2001, I joined over 100 fellow veterans in a march in front of the Los Angeles Federal Building, carrying our beloved flags upside down. To this day, my flag is displayed upside down. Our great Nation was taken, not by any grand military force or coupe, but by greed, power, and money, and handed over to an extremist right wing government. In October of 2000, I delighted in my volunteer work, where I continually met new and wonderful people from all walks of life. I met Latin Americans, Korean Americans, African Americans, gay Americans, lesbian Americans, transgendered Americans, wealthy Americans, poor Americans, you name it. There was only one thing that they all had in common: they were Americans, and proud of it. E Plurubus Unum. Now, nearly three years later, I look around and see hatred in the eyes of everyone I meet. The hatred that they feel is not directed towards Saddam Hussein or Osama Bin Ladin, but towards their fellow Americans. Skin color, racial origin, sexual preferences, gender identities, and even religions have all become valid reasons for Americans to hate and harm one another. Extremists on the left and right surround the quiet town I moved to in Iowa, and can be found anywhere in the formerly United States. I hear that our Congress has introduced a bill to be voted on as an Ammendment to the United States Constitution. Though I did not catch the name of the bill, I caught the understanding of it's language. If passed, this would become the first Ammendment to my beloved Constitution in history to strip rights from Americans. Our Constitution thus far only grants and guarantees rights to the American people. There is currently no language in our Constitution which dehumanizes an entire "community" of American citizens, and strips their rights from them. I'm sure you are familiar with the bill I am writing about. Regardless of your personal views regarding gay, bisexual, and transgendered men and women, I would like to attempt to strip the labels out from under that. They are American people. We don't go around saying "Black people, white people, yellow people." Veteran to veteran, I know I need not spell out the Army's stand on skin colors. My point is that they are all American people, first and foremost. The minute we install any wording into my beloved Constitution that strips rights from American people, well, that will be the minute I shall elect to leave this Nation. I served over 5 years, during peace and war, and as long as they permitted me, in the United States Army defending and protecting my beloved flag and Constitution. I was honorably discharged due to "cutbacks" that were initiated by President George H.W. Bush, because I had sustained an injury to my ankle which left me permanently disabled and unfit for combat-theater duty (I could no longer run or carry over 60 pounds). I am only one American voice. Now, I am speaking to you, because the current candidates on the Democratic Primaries ... Well, sir, I don't think that any of them are fit to run a platoon, let alone the Nation. Reverend Sharpton is the only half-decent leader of the lot, in my opinion, but he is much too strongly tied to a religion. Over 230 years ago, the ancestors of this Nation fled the opression of a Roman Catholic governed world. I can not, in good conscience, vote a religious figure into the Presidency, regardless of his or her ability to lead people. I doubt that I am alone in that viewpoint, and therefore doubt that Rev. Sharpton will get the Nomination. That leaves our Nation filled with American people who live in fear and progressively lose more rights to the extremist right wing government, with no good choice of Democratic candidates to oppose Mr. Bush. I don't know what your views on several issues are, yet. I do want to learn what they are. I seriously doubt that I will agree with even half of them, but frankly, Sir, you are the best chance this Nation has of getting our beloved flag back. Although I am certain you are already aware, Sir, I would like to remind you that retired Generals have lead the polls whenever they ran for Office, and they have made the best darn Presidents this Nation has ever known. America needs you, General Clark, to regain our flag, our Constitution, and our dignity, for all American people. Please run for the Presidency of the United States of America, so that I can flip my flag back the way it belongs, waving ever proud, true, and upside-right! Sincerely, Deborah Jackson

Right now, the only thought that gives me hope for the future of this country is the possibility that you will run for president. With a mounting deficit, countless erosions of environmental protections, a mounting death toll in Iraq, a growing list of lies from this administration to the American public, the denial of basic services to the least advantaged of us in favor of the most advantaged, and lies, lies, lies dating back to Mr. Bush's governorship (lies about the success of the Texas education system, for example), I have grown quite disheartened. General Clark, I am a US service member. I spent six years in the Navy and transferred to the reserves last year. There seems to be a myth in the military that you're not a proper soldier, or sailor, in my case, if you're not a devout republican and hate taxation for any reason. Most of my political views rise from the traditional ideals of the Democratic Party with the exception of the Party's stance on military issues such as service member pay, defense spending and base closures. I think that those of us who are democrats with military background often find ourselves torn between voting for the best guy for the job and voting for the guy who will give us the best raises and benefits. I would hope that being who you are with your background you might be able to transcend some of the partisan gaps that these issues expose. I have a lot of faith in you as a Presidential candidate, a lot more faith than I've had in candidates from either recently. General: Former Defense Secretary Cohen -- a Republican, for cryin' out loud -- is voicing aloud the fear that ineptitude by the Bush administration is placing the nation "adrift" toward war, or toward the sale by North Korea of a nuclear weapon to terrorists who will seek to detonate it in an American city. While I am "Southern by the Grace of God" I live near New York City, one of the two likeliest targets, and my wife and I are discussing moving. The President is SO isolated from reality: he isn't awfully bright, his entire life has been one of privilege and wealth, the bit with the jet-landing on the aircraft carrier made me want to throw up, and everything -- national security and anti-terrorism included -- done by this administration is vetted by Karl Rove and Dick Cheney to maximize potential gain for the REAL AGENDA of the Republican Party, which is (1) to shift the tax burden from the rich to the upper-middle and middle classes; 2) to serve big-money, corporate interests; and (3) to conceal and distort the truth, and use the "Patriot Act" (didn't the Hitler era teach us deep mistrust of such misnomers?) and like measures to make all opposition appear unpatriotic. General, several declared Democratic candidates are good and able men who would make good presidents but no Democrat goes to the White House without carrying at least a half-dozen Southern states, and Sen. Edwards' campaign is going nowhere and Sen. Kerry, simply by being from Massachusetts, doesn't have a prayer in Dixie. (OK, he was a war hero, so MAYBE he'd stand a chance in Florida, with its transplanted Northerners). General, this goes so far beyond the rich sticking it to the rest of us. We can survive that. But the ineptitude in the international sphere, coupled with the over-aggressive, unilateralist "my way or the highway" posturing, is leading us down a perilous path indeed. The Republicans will have their Attack Machine and unlimited funds. However, like it or not, you are the only Democrat with a snowball's chance, and you have the message, and the courage, and the credibility. As an Arkansan, you are no doubt familiar with the maxim of Gen. Stonewall Jackson. He said, "Duty is ours. Consequences are God's." Unlike the career politicans that the Democratics have thus far declared, I don't think you, sir, have the luxury of considering what defeat, and you might well lose, might mean to your future political prospects. I despised Nixon, I thought Ronald Reagan was the Fraud of the Millennium. But I have not in my 52 years so feared for the future of my country as I do now. Let me suggest, respectfully, that your situation cannot be one of calculation. It is, I believe, your duty to your country, and also to what you have done with your life in serving your country, to make the effort. I think if you don't delay too long you will have a hell of a good chance -- I'm salivating at the idea of you and President Bush on a debate podium -- but however long the odds, as "Stonewall" said the consequences are Gods. I hope it becomes clear to you what the right thing to do is. Please run!

Dear General Clark, I am writing to encourage you to seek the Democratic nomination for President of the United States. I was deeply involved in Republican Party politics for about 15 years (served as state chairman of the College Republicans of Texas and national vice president of Log Cabin Republicans, not to mention precinct chair, state delegate and involvement in way too many campaigns to remember). However, I've become deeply disallusioned with the Republican Party and now consider myself an Indepedent (although I did vote in the Democratic primary in 2002). The GOP's abandonment of fiscal sanity, their conduct of a single-minded foreign policy and their lurch to the far right on social issues finally caused me to break with the party of Lincoln, TR and Eisenhower. General Clark, I have already signed a pre-written online Web letter to you, but I feel I have to say more than "please run". I hope that is OK. Being 45 years old, I have lost faith in much of what I was taught growing up, but one thing that I was taught that is as true now as it was then is how important America is to this world. Without this country, the world would likely be totally communist and/or fascist. Freedom would only be a dream. I only became interested in politics in the late 80's/early 90's, due to the sorry situation we were in. We got back on track with Clinton, but I see us right back in that sorry situation again. General we need a man who has our country as his first priority and can help us turn our country around . Sir, As a retired USAF Colonel, I am asking you to recall the oaths that we took as young officers---to protect and defend the USA. Now, as we survey the world and the domestic situation, it is inescapable that our country is in "deep doo doo" and we need someone with the "vision thing". We are heading down a slippery slope that will eventually lead us to ruin if not reversed---what kind of administration would intentionally alienate our oldest and strongest allies, over-commit our military forces, engage in a bankrupting policy of nation building in Iraq, distrust its own people (Patriot Act), ignore and/or denigrate the advice of its own military officers and poplulate its ranks with persons chosen because of loyalty, not intellect? What we need is an "education president"---there is much that needs to be explained to America and you are just the man to do it. Should you decide to step up and meet this challenge, I would be honored to do all that I can to help you in this important work. General Clark, America needs you. Please run for president.

Dear General Clark, In this time of war, potential of war and the economic problems we face here at home, it would be great to have a President that can be trusted by the American public. George W. Bush has taken our trust and used it for gain to get what HE wanted...war in Iraq. All that notwithstanding, he has effectively isolated the United States from the Kyoto Treaty for global warming, instead using his power at president to withdraw from the treaty and support "big oil" and essentially ignoring public outcry for environmental protection. I believe that you, and you alone, would make an exceptional President, one who would listen to the American public and make decisions based on the interests of the United States, and not of your own personal agenda. Please General Clark, run for President and give the confidence of the Presidency back to the American public!

General Clark, Every morning I read the New York Times, and every morning I despair. As much as I disagree with the Bush administration, when the chairman of the Republican National Committee says of the Democratic presidential candidates in this morning's Times that "We know what they are against. We know they don't like the president. But what are they going to do?" I am forced to admit he is right. None of them stand a chance. But the Bush administration is afraid of you. They don't want you to run because they know you will win. In every aspect that Bush is percieved to be good, you are better. And everything Bush lacks, you have, in spades. I'm not saying this to flatter you, I say it because this country needs you. At this moment in history, this defining moment, you stand as the only man who can rescue America from the dangerous path down which she is being led. Please run for president, for our sakes.
